I was walking to a stand early one foggy morning about an hour before daylight, and had to cross a small meadow with a small seep spring in the middle. The seep was about 30 yards in diameter, surrounded by small trees. The trail I was on went through the trees, knew it pretty well, and I didn't want to use my flashlight because I didn't want to spook anything with the light. As I approached the trees, something made me stop about 5 feet from them. I wasn't sure what was bothering me, so I decided to turn on my light and look around. There in front of my face, just another pace or two away, was one of the biggest orb spiders I'd ever seen, and a huge web across the path! The fog was clinging to and dripping off the web. I shone my light around the other trees, and there must have been 100 spider webs like that in those trees. Now I ain't scared of spiders, but I sure as heck don't like those sticky webs all over my face, and I'd rather not have a huge spider crawling across it either! So I gave the spring a wide berth and decided I'd use my light the rest of the way to the stand!

Is an orb spider like a corn spider? I've had them big buggers crawling on my sholder, I'm not afraid of them either but sure don't like coming face to face 🙁
I think "orb weaver" is the correct term, but we also used to call them grove spiders, because they'd be all over the citrus groves. They look like this:
