My opening weekend was ok but was cut a little short. I was duck hunting on the Withlacoochie River.
Saturday morning set up a little later then expected and only saw 4 ducks fly but werent close enough for a shot.
That afternoon I go for a walk behind camp in Jumper Creek WMA. The check station was packed with trucks. I go walking on the same trail that had been using for over 10 years but somebody marked the trail with orange and white spray paint :nono I keep walking in about a couple hundred yards and spook up a deer right off the trail. Didnt get to see it to determine what it was but all i saw running away was a white a$$. Keep walking so im about a mile in and i come across someones ground blind made outta palm fronds :no Keep going further and go to the tree that i had been using for the past few years and somebody was in the tree :eek That area was the perfect setup and i had always seen deer there. So I turn around and get outta there. On my way out, there were two hunters sitting and having lunch right next to the fence where the WMA ends, and our private land begins. :pinch
Back when I first started hunting there about 7 years ago, we were always the only people back there and NEVER saw evidence of people, no stands, no ribbon, no nothing. Now there are loads of people hunting right behind our camp. Within the past year too we have had a problem with people cutting the locks on our trailers. They never stole stands, or decoys, or anything just always flashlights and batteries and lighters. (sounds like it would be kids)
Anyway go back out on the river that evening and did not see one duck at all. The boat wasnt running that good and we didnt really feel safe about taking it out again so we just went home.
Any time spent in the woods is way better then time spent at home so ill more then likely be hitting Lochloosa WMA next weekend :rockon
Sounds like one of those days. We've all had them. Better luck next weekend. I think I'm gonna go try to kill a hog, I'm to damn bored sitting here and I have plenty of arrows left to sling.
The one down side to the start of hunting season is...
Now the forum is dead on the weekends cause everyone is in the woods :rockon
Kemster my new BFF. I try to make an out of state hunt every year or so. This year I'm tring to go to north Missouri. Last year I went to Michigan and hunted. If you can get a few guys to go together and split expenses it makes it nice. I also would love to hunt Indiana. I need to know someone a little more personally before I'd make an out of state trip. When we went to Michigam 3 of us split gas and groceries and took turns drivind straight thru. Makes it nice.
Call for a decayed cat good one! :eek
