Ok guys... I fell victim to a new AR15 purchase. Arrived this week. Diamondback DB15. LOVE it. Shoots great, comfortable etc.
Whats the overall opinion over here about the .223 round and hunting hogs. You do a search on the net and its all over the board. I have shot hogs with a .270, 12 gauge slug and a 3030. They all dropped. I have never used a .223 on an animal. Net.... I figure if people bow hunt them, a .223 would work too.
I have thought about a barrel change out to a 300 black out for hunting, but I wonder if that's really necessary.
use a good hunting rd in 223 and they will drop. 300 BO is a shorter range Rd and more or less like a 30/30 Rd. Stay with the 223 and use a good 62g hunting rd.
If you are going to change the upper, I say go with the 6.8 SPC. It has been my no.1 since I got it. I load Hornady 120 SST's and have taken two deer and three hogs with it. Nothing has taken a single step after the first shot. I also have one in 5.56 but have not used it to hunt with. However, I have been thinking of using it on hogs. I have Barnes TXS 62 gr. bullets I would use. I don't think Hornady makes SST's for 5.56. I have my 30-06 for hunts that I know I will be shooting long range.
+1 to ario 6.8 . I wish I did that , but love my 308.
Thanks guys. I was looking at the 62 grain .223 too. I might look at a second upper in 6.8 spc or 300 black out. I like playing around with reloading so that would be fun. Looks like my Remington .270 is going up for sale. Going to miss her, but I just don't see me taking 300 yard shots on a deer in PA anymore. I really have no desire to ever get snowed into a ground blind again. LOL. PLUS... I like to duck hunt during the winter now.
