While at my place yesterday afternoon I met a fellow from the citrus grove next to my property. It was the first time I met someone from that side of the fence. We introduced ourselves and started making some small talks about the property and the grove. It turns out that he is the foreman at the grove and he lives on the property with his family.
He said he occasionally shoots hogs when he sees them on service roads and that it's usually long distance shots... 400+ yards on many occasions. We started talking about long range shooting and he tells me that he has a 1,400 yard "range" at the grove where he shoots. He ask me if I wanted to see it so I hop on his truck and we drive about 1 mile into the grove to a service road along the grove with a canal and at the end is a large dirt berm of about 40' wide and 15' high. He said every 100 yards there are 2"x4" poles on the side of the road with numbers to indicate the distance to the berm and the entire length is 1,400 yards. After a little more talking he invites me to come shoot there with him next weekend. He said he doesn't shoot often but does enjoy it a lot.
I haven't shot 600+ yards for about 2 years but I still shoot 600 and 400 yards few times a year and shoot up to 200 yards on my property regularly. I shot 1,000 yards few times up north but the last time was 3 years ago. It will be good to take out some of the long range gears and stretch the distance again.
I told him about my family, our property, that we are there only part time and the vandalism we had last year and he said he'll check up on our place regularly.
Before he departed we talked some more about shooting and hunting and we seemed to "click" together. He said maybe we can snipe hogs at the grove together one day.
I came home with a big grin on my face 😀
kc45,
I can understand coming home with a big grin on your face! Some meetings are just meant to be and turn out good. I haven't shot any long range targets like you are talking about since the Marine Corps in the '60's. (that was only 500 yards-prone) Keep us posted how this turns out. Treefarmer
Its nice to have locals that will "check in" on your spot from time to time since you're not there full time.
Bring him a little something next time you go to your property and you will have security forever!
or he is the one "sniping" your property when you are absent.....
