What do you all think of the 7mm Rem Mag?
Just my opinion
I have a 7mm in Win mod 70 that is a tack driver. But it will never see the outside of my gun safe again for Florida hunting. Too much gun for less than 100yd shots. Too many better calibers to choose from for that type of hunting we do in these swamps
Plus I was getting too much meat waste from it
Too much for me also for Georgia....just my opinion....would prefer the 7mm 08...
Concur with Davet and Iluv2hunt that the 7MM is to much gun, especially in FL, GA, SC, and AL. I have and use all short action rifles in .243, 7MM-08., .308, .30-30, and .25-06 and haven't had any issues killing deer and hogs with the proper bullet selection.
If you can get it for less than $350 you made a good deal. I wouldn't pay more than $400 for one unless it had a nice Leupold on it. Most of the on-line guns forums and auctions are loaded with 7MM and .300 Win Mag guns in the South, IMHO it's because they are to much gun in the South and once the owners figure that out, they sell them.
My two cents.
I have a Savage 7mm Rem Mag now that I used last season in Mississippi. Took a nice whitetail at 150 yards or so. Dropped him right there without much meat loss. There are opportunities for much longer shots on the property as it is a 1000 acre farm with woods surrounding it. For Florida I use my marlin 30-30 with no problem.
So far I like the 7mm Mag. Just thought I'd get some other thoughts.
If you are sitting on big cut downs, or food plots where you can shoot 100-400 yards they are great. Just too much energy for me, being I hunt very thick, in your face type stuff.
Every deer and hog I shot had tremendous waste. I could punch one thru the ribs, and guarantee total rib meat loss, 1/2 of the shoulders would have shock trauma, and the front portion of the backstrap would have trauma.
Only reason I keep hanging on to mine is the hope I get to go back out west again. For long range shooting, they are a great caliber. Just not my style
And mine is the most accurate rifle I own too. It will shoot sub 1/4"MOA with Federal Fusions, and I aint the best bench shooter on the planet either
