old and unwanted ammo

I was given a bunch of stuff from my dad and stepdad here lately and have wound up with some unwanted ammo. have a 6qt tote full of shotgun shells that or splitting open and a box of 30/30 ammo that was hand loaded and has " EXTRA HOT" wrote on box. What do I do with this stuff Im not gonna use? disposal

I think you can take it to a local police station and they will take it in and dispose of it. Not positive though

I think you can bring it to a range and they will dispose of it also.

So at what point are shells to old? I understand the shotgun shell splitting open on the end but what about riffle shells? If they get old why do folks stock pile?

the ones I have or super hot loads by a person I don't know. That being said I aint gonna pull a trigger on them. rifle and hand gun ammo will last many many moons as long at it has been kept in a cool dry place. I rotate my ammo as I shoot it and replace it.
