I think it would make a mess to clean out of the barrel. That is some nasty crap
its common for cap/ball revolver to use it to prevent chain firing..
they say its messy but works and is easier to wipe off then the cleaning out unburnt powder or residue from powder..
seen lots say to use good ole lard instead of bore butter.. same outcome, but cheaper
you would need to put it on very lightly, it would be gone after the first shot anyway and not sure how well it would work anyway. if you try it let us know. the thing with shotguns is you are getting melted plastic build up as well as lead. I think I would spend the money on some diff brushes, stainless/bronze & nylon, as well as diff solvents. I use shooters choice, not sayin it's the absolute best, but it's a higher grade than hoppes imo. find one that works better for you, then buy a bunch of it. I usually use diff types at the same time,ex start with shooters choice firearm cleaner,brush/swab/remove with brake cleaner, then either s.c. lead or copper remover, brush/swab/remove with brake cleaner and oil lightly when done. I prefer breakfree oil as it goes on lightly, penetrates well, and lasts a long time. solvents and oils are getting more expensive than good booze. a good coated one piece cleaning rod will make life easier also. I'd bet there are some cheap homemade concoctions that work well (just be carefull how long you leave them on and clean/remove well and oil after) if anyone wants to share recipes.
for cap & ball, try crisco, you can get a 5 lb can for what a 1oz tube of bore butter costs and it has a ton of other uses. ex all strip down, smear it all over each other and wrassle, loser has to clean ALL the guns, and can use some to soothe his aching bung. lol.
I use patches saturated in it when shooting PRB's....
I don't understand what's so messy about it. I guess I just do things different. Makes clean-up easy.
Never bought into the whole leading in the barrel thing. I shoot round balls out of smoothbores time after time with no leading. Some fouling, eventually but that's it. I guess if you shot enough times (A BUNCH!?!?!) you might see something but I'm not sure any bullet coating is the answer, instead a good cleaning before that point is reached would be better.
