You are correct Rob. I came across wrong in my last post, I am in a bad mood today and am wording things wrong, or not the way I intend them to mean

Sitting in a stand and placing a shot where I want it, I have no problems shooting them with a 223. I killed 12 hogs this season, and with the exception of an archery kill, every single one was a head or neck shot

Stalking them in thick cover, a 223 is not the best choice. It would be my 30-30 lever gun or my 44 carbine in my hand. But even still, it would be a neck shot if possible. But thats just me

Didn't mean to derail, just clarifying what I meant

My AR is my all-around hog gun. i stalk the woods and creek beds with it. Also hit the open areas with it. Haven't really had any issues with it. easy to creep around with an AR. Most of mine have dropped with one shot. It is just a matter of getting the right ammo. I first used a 43 speer HP. and had some get away. but with the 60 gr nosler. ain't nothing getting away.

Can't see spending all that money to feed my deer rifles ammo to shot hogs with. besides they are just pigs, not hell spawned beasts that will eat your kids in the middle of the night. lol . just pigs.

No problem Allen. Ultimately shot placement and bullet select are the key in any caliber! Plenty of range time doesn't hurt either. You are all correct. Even with the wrong ammo in an .06 you could have problems. Guess I just feel more comfortable with something bigger and heavier in close cover. I've shot hogs with my .243 from a stand but I wouldn't carry it down into the creek bottoms of South GA where I had the potential of running into a crew of 20-30 hogs all around me... That's 12 gauge slug, .30-30, .375, .45-70, .44 Mag country. My point is that you probably could use a .223 given the right scenerio, but given a different scenerio I wouldn't recommend it.

That 6.8 is a great round and will easily do the trick IMHO in nearly any scenerio. Congrats.

as I am the least qualified to speak of killing hogs (only got 1), I can speak as somewhat of an expert at being fat and lazy. when it's 90+ degrees and stalking thru thick stuff I'd rather carry something that weighs 6 lbs vs 9 lbs, an ultralight short action/barrel carbine in 308/7mm08 with a low power variable scope, that will be good from 0-200yds, or an open sighted lever good to 150 yds app, depending on the shooter. but given the choice in AR platform (for hog hunting) I'd probably go for the 6.8 and reload. for the apocalypse I'd rather have it in 223.
