Yall tell me, I had never seen this...

So yesterday afternoon I was tinkering around with stuff on the boat, getting ready for this coming weekend.
I got out a spool of 40# Trilene Big game.
I needed to tie up and rig about a dozen dropper rigs for this trip.

Now I have been tying dropper rigs for years, and can tie one blind folded, asleep, drunk, you name it...

So I start trying to tie some up, and could not get them to seat down. Every attempt the knot kept slipping.

Ok, I thought I am just out of practice since I haven't fished since last year. Maybe I somehow forgot how to tie it. I pulled up the animated knot website on my phone and sure enough I was tying it correctly.
I tried 8 wraps instead of 6 like it calls for. Still slipped.

So I had a few more beers and pondered it more. I took the spool of line and tied several other knots I tie regularly and every knot I tied slipped.

So I then put that spool of line away and got an older partial spool out of my tackle bag. I tied up a rig on the first try and no problems. I tied up about a dozen of them and they all held like they are supposed to.

When I got done I got the "bad' spool out again and stripped off about 100' and threw it away. I tried once again to tie another rig and once again it slipped

Anyone else ever seen that in a spool of mono???

i dont use mono so i cant help you on that.. But i noticed that thicker flaurocarbon like 40lb will slip unless you get it real tight.. and sometimes it still slips.

Was it a fresh spool, or some you had laying around for a while? I know old mono can take on wierd characteristics if it is old and has been exposed to heat or UV rays (sun).

A guy I worked with at Wellcraft who moonlighted as a tarpon guide told me you can strip off the first few layers, then poor white vinegar over the line, let it sit for a minute or so, and then rinse well with fresh water, and it will restore the "finish". Expect it to be a little weaker, about 10%, than it's rated strength.

It was a new spool, but I bought it last year. It still had the wrapper on it
