although both my wife and I enjoy venison and eat what I shoot, I cannot say I hunt for food. if you added up all the money I've spent over the years on guns, ammo, binocs, clothes, boots, trucks, asst hunting and camping gear, gas going and getting back, motels, campgrounds, restaurants and bars, the cost of that venison is probobly about 500$ a pound. I'd be able to eat caviar and champagne with my surf and turf every nite. it's the freindship/commraderie, peace and relaxation that goes with that fresh air, a chance to unwind and de-stress. that 1 hour nap I take in the woods feels like 14hrs at home. thats what I figure that money is realy spent on, and worth every cent.
i can never think about what venison costs me a pound. way too much. but i enjoy every minute of my trips. even if i see no deer. (doesn't happen often) lol. usually see them just don't always get a shot. the experience is what should be enjoyed. you have won already just being in the woods. to harvest is a bonus. as for me and my family , i do hunt for food. helps to offset grocery bill. hoping to put 3-4 more in the freezer this year.

Here at our hunt cabin bucks are broke down to personal "first buck" if you have never shot a buck on any land. This buck can be any horn size and body size! After that I have a 8pt or better rule set in place unless a hunter wants to have a special agreement to shoot and collect certain racks for their own trophy collection.I have a personal choice for my hunting to only hunt book bucks on my own land but on others private or public lands unless told I just look for meat deer buck or doe.I have been lucky enough to hunt several states for whitetails and have seen many deer and taken a few too.I have hunted area's where an small 8pt buck is king size to area's that the sky is the limit and all have been fun to me.
When it boils down I enjoy the meat and yes a good buck too but the hunt is ultimate to me. So if I take an animal that is the special bonus and if not, well then I had fun anyways because for me the "kill" is not that much at all.
i have never really got into the biology side of deer hunting until last year. my last lease was only 80 acres and any deer we saw would get shot. if it was legal. most of the deer where traveling through anyways. have read more stuff since i got my larger lease. granted it is only 340 acres. but i do have resident deer. with some good isolated, thick bedding areas. but there is alot of informative and insightful stuff out there that i have read. not being a high fence and knowing that the neighbors are gonna shoot anything legal, really limits me as far as getting really anal about QDM. i have alot of feeders going to try and keep the deer on my side. my food plots did not do as well as expected(thank you logging company)
