It has been a slow season for me so far. I had to cut back on some of my hunts to be with my wife more after the loss of her father. Still I able to harvest a decent buck on a public land bow hunt.
My hunt was tough with the weather getting warmer as each day wore on. I figured the first day, or 2 would be my best chance to score. Each day the mornings were on fire the first 2 mornings I saw 25 deer 4 of them were bucks. The first deer I saw looked real nice except for he busted off his left side ten minutes later I had a 6 pt. chase a doe behind me. Never had a shot at any of the animals. I could kill doe, or buck on this hunt, but nothing ever worked out from this set up. The second morning I had a 3 pt. dancing around my stand, but he got a pass. After 2 days of hunting the sweet spot I decided to make a move since I am a smoker after 2 days I usually have worn out my welcome. I had a spot in mind about 150yds away, and hung a stand in a hickory tree. That evening was a flop never saw 1 deer on the evening sits. The last morning was the slowest of them all. I almost cut the hunt short because there are no acorns where I was hunting, but my hickory tree was like an all you could eat buffet for every squirrel in the hammock. The sound of them gnawing on the nuts all morning, and the knots on my head from being bombed 3 times before 9 a.m. were about all I could take. Getting ready to go, and a doe appeared to my right I was prepared to draw the bow as she approached then she bolted back the way she came from. A minute, or 2 passed, and I caught a glimpse of her down through the hammock heading away. Boy am I glad she left. My hunt would have been over. I decided to stay till 10:30, but only had to stay till 10:00. About 5 till the hour I caught a flicker out of the corner of my eye where I last saw the doe. As I focused on that spot for a minute he made a move, and I could see some rack. I wasn't sure on the size though the 1 thing I was sure of was that the deer was not coming my direction. He was heading for my sweet spot where I had been sitting for 2 days. I only got a glimpse of him, and could not see the deer. Like a good little boyscout I was prepared for any thing. The wind was drifting back that direction so I pulled out my can call, and the last couple of drops of doe in heat I had. I turned the can twice, and sprayed the last 2 pumps from the bottle. Than prepared to play. After standing ready for a couple of minutes nothing happened so I decided to sit. Right after sitting I glanced over my shoulder to see nice dark set of horns coming. I knew this was it I stood turned around, and as the deer cleared some brush I started to draw. I had been real sore in my upper body, as I drew something went wrong right at the hardest point before it lets off some thing in my shoulder, and bicep pulled. I had to dig real deep to get to full draw. As I did the deer sensed something was not right, and stopped quickly, and raised his head. The deer was quartering to me at 25yds, I had no choice, but to let it fly my arm could not take any more. I must say I have made better shots. The arrow hit him in the neck instantly breaking it dropping him in his tracks. Out of respect for the animal I quickly put another right in the front shoulder angling into the chest cavity. The deer was a good dark horned swamp buck 8pt almost a 9pt. not my biggest, but I am quite proud of him. Here are some pics.
