Just a note there in inform people of a really god way to hunt Wyoming on the cheap. Every year, they have what are calleod reduced price tags available for doe/fawn deer and antelope and cow/calf elk. These tage only fo for about half what the normal priced tags go for, and are good in the same seasons.
You can really save a bundle with these tags. For instance, this year I put in for 2 doe/fawn antelope tags for the area around Farson. The tags only cost $48 apiece non-resident. So, for less than a hundred bucks, I'll have the chance to put 2 antelpoe in the freezer. And you haven't lived until you have eaten antelope meat! For the area I put in for, they had over 600 tags available and less than 200 people applied for them as a first choice draw. That translates into virtually gauranteed tags. A real plus to this system is that you could apply for a buck tag at regular price and still apply for 2 reduced price tags and take 3 antelope home.
If anyone wants to experience western hunting and really don't care about trophy heads, this is a hard system to beat.
Cheers

My dad killed an antelope in Wyoming back in the early 70's. That was some of the awfullest meat I ever ate! The only thing good was the summer sausage the processor made up, which was 25% antelope, and the rest beef and pork. Now I ain't saying antelope can't be good, but I'm not in a hurry for a freezer full!
Now elk is another story. I'd love to have to buy another freezer to put an elk or two into it!
i tried antelope moose and elk. moose was the worst. hopefully ill be bring some elk back this year. i should be gettin some trailcam pic soon.
I didn't want to derail this mans thread, but I have to agree with Gary on the antelope. I have eaten it a few times, and honestly have been repulsed by it
What is weird is they are in the same family as deer and goats. I eat my weight in deer meat every year, and have had goat many many times and love both of them. Antelope tastes like whatever they eat. Last time I had it was in '03 while in colorado. A boy had killed one and it tasted just like sage grass
The other weird thing is they cohabitate with mule deer. Personally, mulie meat is much better than whitetail, and you don't have that grass taste to it
Elk is by far the best native american game animal one can eat. I had over 200 pounds from the elk I killed and we cried when the last piece was cooked
Back on the topic, that is a good deal on the tags. I am gonna get back out West one of these days
A guy I know works for Blue Bunny Ice Cream, and the company owner has a big ranch in western South Dakota. The guy I know was going to get me up there this season for pheasant, white tail and antelope hunts, but the company has canceled this years annual trips due to the economy. I'm looking forward to someday being able to get back out west for some hunting, and don't care where as long as there's mountains and game!
