I have a chance to buy a Remington Model 788 22-250, do not know much about at looked it up on the internet. From what i can find it is a old gun years from 1967 to 1983. Just seeing if anyone know much about before I try to make a deal Thanks,
We have a Rem. 788 in .243 with 18" bbl. and it is a pleasure to shoot. My son killed his 1st deer with it using the factory iron sights when he was 9 yrs. old, he's 33 now. Had it a long time and not had any issues with it. It is not as slick as a mod. 700 because I think it has a hard wood stock, not a traditional walnut like the older model 700 rifles had. A 22/250 ought to be a real prize and real pleasant to shoot. Worst thing about the little gun is the detachable clip that could be lost or misplaced. Treefarmer

Back when I was a teenager ('77-84) we used to go out to Texas to hunt with some of my dad's friends. One of the guys had a lease south of San Antonio that we hunted a lot, and his son Shannon used a .22-250 to kill many deer. I'm pretty sure it was a Remington Model 788, and it was a pleasure to shoot. On one trip, Shannon shot a nice 8pt from his stand, right at the base of its throat, dropped in its tracks. When he got down about 30 minutes later to pull it back over to his stand and wait for his dad to pick him up, a bunch of javelina came running out of the bushes ahead of him. He dropped two of them, both on the run. I watched him do it from about 50 yards away as I was walking up to see if he needed help tracking what he'd shot. That kid was crazy as a sprayed roach, but he could hunt and shoot!
I have owned a mod 788 22-250 for about 35 years. one of the first guns I bought with my own money back in high school. I paid 125.00 dollars for it at a pawn shop. and it is still one of the best shootin gun I have. If you have been doing some research on it you know it is one of remingtons better shooting guns for the price. I have made my longest shot with it killed a deer at 425 yards across a cow pasture and shot many at 200 to 300. one thing I had to do was glass bed the barrel it would only shoot about 3 to 4 shots in a tight group then they would start to wander 4" to 6", I had the barrel bedded and it fixed the problem.
