I found this on another huntings site.. seems like it would work.. I honestly would just buy the huge family back for 20 bucks.. lasts you the whole season.. but IF you like to tinker with stuff this is the thread for you.
OK-this is fo real. I have been making these for 3 years and have got it down.
Ok- safety first- please don't smoke or have any open flames around while doing this and always wear your safety goggles. start by looking at the cell and making sure it's empty and you see no liquid inside. then depress the middle of the brass valve on top with something small like a toothpick to release any pressure.now we're ready to start-
-Drill an 11/64" hole in the middle bottom of cell where you see the little metal ball. the ball will go inside of cell. Poke a small metal wire or screwdriver inside the hole and touch a decent magnet to the wire on the outside of cell. shake cell around and the little metal ball will stick to the wire from magnetism, pull out the wire with ball attached.
Next we are gonna install a refill valve but first I gotta tell ya where to gettem. I used to bust the little plastic valves out of the refillable plastic lighters but they sometimes break while removeing them and they are cheap and prone to leak. Now i use a brass valve that I get from harbor freight tools. if ya don't have one in your town you can order them online. I get the valve from a little mini torch called a pencil torch. it unscrews from the bottom of the torch with a small screwdriver. i use a small screwdriver with a little slot ground out of the middle of the blade which makes it a little easier to unscrew and screw the valves in. I signed up for harbor freight tools email coupons which they send me once a week and about 4 times a year I see a printable coupon for the pencil torches for $1.29 where as they are usually $4.99. There is a limit of 5 per coupon and the last one went out of date on july 12th. The valve screws right into the hole you drilled in the bottom of the cell.
Next, mix up some 2 part epoxy and dab/apply a little around the outside edge of the brass valve to make a seal and hold it in, being careful not to get any on the piece that potrudes out where you refill it. put the cap on the cell and set it upside down until epoxy cures (I let them sit overnight).
Next day take a container of butane fule like whats used to refill lighters and add about 1/2" of liquid to cell and make a mark with a sharpie and let sit for another day. If liquid level is still at the mark then the cell has no leaks and it ready to go. when refilling cell, stop about halfway and depress the valve on cell while holding it upside down to release a little of the gas pressure and then finnish filling it. This will make itfill/ take fuel faster.
DONE!!!
Now for the substitute pads- i leave the old pad in (or not) then break up small pieces of the coghlan's mosquito coils and drop into the gille slots on top of the pad. i then tie a piece of camo material cut from an old cotton shirt or whatever over the top of the grille around the thermacell and this holds the pieces of mosquito coil in. the mosquto coils are the type yuo use for camping that you light on fire at the ends and they smoke for a couple hours but we are just gonna heat them on our thermacell. They contain the same active ingredient "d-cis trans allethrin"
i also like to spray acorn juice on my material/pad occaisionally for an added cover scent.

That is a cool idea if you like tinkering with things, but the same company that produces thermacells also makes a prtable curling iron that runs off the same cartridges. They sell just the cartridges in the beauty section of most Walmart stores and you can get like 6 for like 5-10 bucks. If you are like me at the end of the season you have about 30 mats and no butane.
I swung into Harbor freight today and got a pencil torch. took the valve out. I can't find an empty cylinder, though. Gonna have to wait till I have one to put it together
Well I made one last night. I used waterweld instead of epoxy to seal it (That is what I had). Let it set overnight. Filled it this morning and it is holding.
cool.
