mdl 7 doesn't have a drop box, and no thanks, thats the rifle I use 90% of the time. try the browning a bolts, they have a drop box mag, got mine in 270wsm. a little longer and heavier, but accurate as hell and realy lays the smackdown.
The one Im talkin about is the Remington Model 700 Mountain DM (detachable magazine) like this

would love to find this in 7mm 08 at a good price....always wanted one..
I'm also starting to search for a new rifle.Was thinking of a .300 win mag,but now back to a .270.It has to be a Rem 700. What's your view of a 7mm Nacho? All around elk,deer,basically North American big game?What 's the difference between a .7mm and a 7mm08?
the 7mm08 is a 308 brass necked down to 7mm and in reality is not much different than a 308 if I didn't handload I'd go with the 308, it has maybe a slight edge in accuracy and less felt recoil, bot the 308 can load heavier bullets, probably could take an elk with the heaviest well made bullets at 200 yd max. the 7mm rem mag is an excelent choice for mule deer and elk, as well as the 300 win mag . or the winchester short mags in 270,7mm or 300. I have the 270 wsm and with a 150 gr nosler partition at 3'000 fps would feel very confident taking an elk, and the recoils no worse than a 30-06, and very accurate.
+1, Nacho. the 7mm mag has about 20% edge on muzzle velocity and muzzle energy, and the accuracy is outstanding.
I'm not sure what the bbl length in on the mtn rifle in 7mm08, I'm guessing 20-22", depends on the game and terrain you plan on hunting, for me a long shot is 50yds, so I go with the shortest/lightest I can get. the 7mm08 is a dream to reload for, uses little powder gives excelent velocity and can be loaded from 110-175grs, I normaly load 140 gr nosler partitions, but was thinking of loading some 175 partitions for hogs. the round is adequate with good bullet selection and about the best you will find for accuracy/stopping power/low recoil/powder efficient, in a small light short package. my mdl 7 with scope is shorter and weighs less than my winchester lever with open sights. for that gun I might opt for a little more power like the 270, or 280 if planning some long range shooting or larger game
