my exp is with deer, but if it's still standing, keep shooting. if it's on the ground, keep the gun trained on it and keep watching closely. if it looks like it's suffereing/thrashing, shoot again. if it looks dead/not breathing, still watch closely for app 1 minute before aproaching and then don't just kick/nudge it to see if it's dead, touch the bare eyeball with finger or gun bbl if theres no response it's a gonner. don't assume if it's not moving, it's dead. I've had 2 "dead" deer run away on me. 1 I had my foot on it's chest for app 20 seconds, got distracted and stepped away for a moment and it was gone, WIERD.

We need to address this with the POTUS.
How many animals have suffered because of the rising costs of ammo?
Hunters now have to assess if a double tap is worth it.
Cheap ammo for the sake of the animals I say!

Ok...jokes aside. I probably would have if it kept on for more than a minute.
Honestly though, there aren't many pain receptacles in the brain.
So the thrashing was more likely a an inability to react than an actual reaction.
I think.

99% of the time they are dead and don't know it. On a head shot, I think their muscles are wanting them to get up but the nerves won't let them. I shot one a second time this year. A big boar I shot with my M/L. He was trying to get up and actually did the head shake. I gave him a 40 behind the ear. His lungs were soup so he wouldn't have made it far. Problem is, on a body shot if they take off you may never find them as there may or may not be a blood trail

When in doubt, shoot again

This....honest story to follow:

Was hog hunting once using a buddies 357 carbine. Took a shot at a nice hog about 25 yrds. Dropped like a rock. As I was getting ready to come down from the stand he jumped up, shook his head and ran into the palmettos. Got down and walked over. Found a little blood and a tooth. Shot him right thru the mouth and knocked him out cold. Buddy got him a few weeks later.
