OK im thinking about doing a food plot on my lease.. So is there any kind of chart or something that shows what to plant at what times of year? I was gonna plant rye grass but they said it would die and burn in two months with the heat.. Any info would be appreciated. thanks.
Crock...for sure no rye this time of year.......Rackmaster deluxe makes a spring/summer mix that I have used that is pretty good stuff and the deer love it. I cant remember everything in it, but has buckwheat, peas, sorghum, sunflower, and a few other things....need to check their website and find out....you can buy these things separately also.. Stay away from winter cereal stuff like oats, winter wheat, rye....too hot now....You could also plant corn or soybeans now, but the deer are pretty hard on em at first.......
From their website..... Rackmaster deluxe:
50% Soybeans
25% Mixed Cowpeas - Iron & Clay
10% Southern Peas - California Blackeye 46
05% Sorghum
05% Buckwheat (Mancan)
05% Peredovik Black Oil Sunflowers
Like I say...I have used it with great results in middle Ga.....once the sorghum gets up and the sunflowers start blooming the deer love this stuff.....probably cheaper though to just buy the individual seeds at the seed store and make your own blend....
When I put this down I also put down 10-10-10 fertilizer and granular lime if needed.......If your local seed/feed store has a lime spray truck....thats usually the best easiest most economical way to lime...
so i just disc it and throw down seed? and what is a "lime spray truck"
I use Hancock's Spring and summer mix and have had good luck with it I also have PH test done to see if I need to lime / Dolmite
15% Hulled Aeschynomene
25% Alyce Clover
40% Iron/Clay Cowpeas
10% WGF Sorghum
10% Browntop Millet
