Anybody have succes planting a fall plot in North FL? I'm new to the food plot addiction and was wondering your thoughts. I have a lease where I would like to plant a couple small "bowhunting" foodplots. About a 1/4 to 1/2 Acre. I also don't have any heavy equipement to use so I'm thinking of planting something I can throw and drag a chain link fence over to give it some dirt cover.
Wanting to plant as early as possible because my intention is to be able to bowhunt over it. My concern is planting too early and it getting burnt up by the summer heat. I'm looking into possibly an oat/rye/clover mix. Maybe even a oat/clover mix and once the oats have been hammered I could throw some rye on the field considering it does better later into the fall. Also considering brassicas.
This weekend I'm going up and spraying round-up along with doing a soil sample to find out if I need to add lime. I will go and respray it in mid August and plant in early September.
Any thoughts or recomendations?
TIA
Welcome yes there are some good fall options. Having limited equipment will make your options smaller but some good options would be peas, oats, clover with chicory etc. Go in clear the area with a rake if you don't soil test use about 350 lbs of lime per 1/4 ac. Work the lime in the soil as best you can put out your seed with some triple 13 fert. and that should do the trick
ask about buckshot food plot mix
it grows good in the dry north florida white sand
Peas will be hammered first and from what I've seen are the initial attractant. We have 6-8 big plots that are wheat/soybean mixes and seem to grow well but my dad is very experienced with fall plots and they aren't planted until the middle of bow. i am interested in a few bow plots myself so keep us updated on what you do. I am going to try and go with a few mixes and see what I like.
yes I am interested as well....
