you also might check for a tattoo in his ear or lip and I guess they scanned him for a micro chip? a Pic would help the owner ID him and the notched ears are the owners mark too...unless they were done in a fight.
But if he shows pics, then anyone can i.d. the dog and say, "yeah, that's mine!". Now if the dog has some distinguishing characteristic you can avoid showing in the pics and that the owner has to know about, then you can show a few pics and maybe still be able to discern the rightful owner.
Get us a clear pic of the dog and maybe another of his docked tail. That's a common ID for alot of deer dogs (hound mix) bred in my area and most of them are sold to hunters all around the South. I've never heard of the notched ears before on a deer dog, it sounds like you have a potential hog dog.
My concern with posting pictures of him is that someone with dishonest intentions could claim that Coffee is their dog. I love this dog dearly and don't want him to end up in the wrong hands. His coloring is very distinctive, so the rightful owner could describe him in a way that would leave no question whether or not Coffee is his dog. I'm pretty certain the notches aren't from a fight. Both of his ears are notched in the same spot with the exact same shape. His tail is also docked in a relatively unusual way. It's not fully docked, but docked about halfway like some of the pointer breeds are. I'm not sure if this is common for certain types of hunting dogs ... ?
He wasn't chipped when he got to the shelter, so no luck there. They did microchip him when I bailed him out. He also wasn't neutered, but the shelter won't let any dog leave without being neutered. I know most hunters leave their dogs intact, and I know the vast majority are very responsible owners and breeders, but for Coffee it was the snip or the needle. I hope if the owner is found they'll understand that it was that or death for him.
I really appreciate everyone's input!
Thanks for wishing us luck, LacyLoo. Coffee really deserves a great home. I know he may have been dumped, but I keep holding onto the hope that there is someone out there looking for him or who can give him a great home. He's a wonderful, beautiful dog. He is young, active, and intelligent, and wouldn't be happy in a home that can't provide him the physical and mental activity he needs. I just want to see the poor boy go somewhere where he will be happy and loved.
