There are some tilapia that will hit baits, but practically all of them found in the ponds and lakes around here are the Nile tilapia which eats mostly plants, algae, and detritus.
They are a lot like mullet, and some people catch them using bread, dog food, or small worms. I've heard that the little red plastic string that opens a pack of cigarettes can be tied on a small hook and they might take it.
Tilapia are a species of African cichlid. There are some really aggressive cichlid species that look a lot like tilapia and will really put up a fight. When I was young we lived in South Africa, and over there they have what's called a Blue Kurper, and those babies will fight! We caught them on plastic worms and live crickets.
