Are the big name baits actually better than cheaper baits? I went to walmart an spent a good 30-40 minutes checking out plastic baits I think I over thought it I must if picked up an dropped a couple different baits several times. From. Zoom, yum, senkos an the lucky e brand. I thought to myself I snagged bass on a watermelon crawdad that sat in my moms takle box for over 2 years an got 3 fish. I bought a 120 pcs bass kit from the lucky e brand for about 14 bucks an a plastic crawdad set since that's what I had my luck on. Did I do the right thing going with a cheapy brand ?
ill tell you this.. I went to a place called dogfish tackle. I bought some plastics and some rattle traps. Ill tell you that the plastics were much poor quality from walmart compared to the ones in the good store. They were very easy to rip and break. Easily fell off the hook and once you texas rigged it it was only good once. The good plastics the hook hole closes up and is reusable.. the wally world ones not as good. The rattle traps they got in wally world are the good brand "Rat L Trap" but the knock off ones has crappy trouble hooks on them and the paint wears off fast..
This is coming from tons and tons of bass fishing. I FISH ALOT.
I started off planning on just fishing for cats but I caught a couple bass an now its ALL about those largemouth BASSTARDS... Hope that was forum friendly lol..Yeah.. I notice cheap plastic baits tend to rip an come undone real easy. So pretty much anything watermelon from worms to horny toads should be first in tackle box. Is there a variation thats better than the other? watermelon with red sparkles or melon an blue an etc. I didnt buy crankbaits or any kind of spinners thats something more advance i believe.
Any variation of watermelon colors is a good starting point but get a few different colors that are lighter and darker. You never know what color they may want that day if you fish with a friend use different colors and if they are hitting one over the other switch colors. I like the senko type worms they cast a mile with no weight and its hard to fish them wrong. If your using the cheaper worms and they are ripping on you try using a lighter and just melt them back together it will help get another fish or 2 out of them with out going through so many worms.
I favor the 1972 Manns purple jelly worm with the fire tail.
