Here in the Panhandle we've had more than our share of rain this summer. It has been so wet in our woods that I was unable to mow the Durana clover in order to keep the grass and weeds at bay with out making ruts in the patch. Earlier in the year I was able to keep the semi-circle patch pretty clean so it would be ready to plant when the time was right. All that went out the window back in August as we had standing water in the long narrow patch.

The last couple of weeks we were able to disk this patch again and finally got it to the point of being able to put some seed in the ground yesterday.
Hope to be able to keep a running report on this little patch and the adjacent Durana clover patch as the season progresses.
We gotten some deer on camera that are promising, as everyone knows, there is now way to guarantee they will stay on our 80 acres.
Treefarmer

Put it in this past Sunday, collards and peas are already out of the ground in force. Dedicated a large bed to mammoth sunflowers for my wife.
I've always enjoyed the comments, questions and suggestions that have come from posting the development of several different food lots over the last few years here on the FOHAF forum. I really miss the cyber friendship that resulted from participating on this forum.
I recently developed a plan for a new food plot and actually began working on it yesterday. I've been reading about planting between pine rows. Having thinned the pines that are adjacent to my old "go to food plot" a few years back, there is a harvested row, creating a 300 foot by 16 foot place to plant a plot. This calculates to be just over a tenth of an acre. The pine rows are a lot longer but I can only see the west 300 feet from the old shooting house which is a hundred yards north.
In past years we had used this opening as a fire lane when we burned that particular stand of pines. So why not turn it into a long lean food plot? I've read that Durana Clover will tolerate more shade than any other clover so this east-west plot might work out.
I bush-hogged the weeds and then disked the area about 4 times and it looks very promising. I don't have access to a culti-packer so I'll have to devise some way to tighten the soil so the clover will not be planted too deep. Covering a food plot with a disk always seems to limit the germination of clover, it only needs to be about 1/4 inch deep.
If we get much rain I'll be out of business for a while, but planting any time during September should establish a stand. One thing that helps with this idea is the old food plot still has quite a bit of Ladino clover in it from past years. This is the patch where we planted the corn a few years ago. It has been in soybeans, Clover, Iron and Clay peas, Abruzzi Rye, Wheat and corn over the years. The shooting house is usually easy to reach but being on the north side, scent is sometimes an issue. Also the automatic corn feeder is set another 4 or 5 pine rows south of the plot.
Starting to feel my age, so this smaller plot will be a little easier to establish and tend. If I can, I'll try to do a weekly update as we did in the past.
If I can still figure out how to post pictures we'll give it a whirl. Without pictures this will be pretty dull stuff.
Treefarmer

Several months back we started working on a special food plot for our grandsons. Hunting from the elevated stand at the main food plot seems a little bit overwhelming to the boys, shots out to 175 yards a possibility but not the ideal when you are 11 and 12 years old.

The grandsons helped me build a 4X6 shooting house on skids, back in April. Still need to finish it up, widows and a door. We will drag it to the plot with a tractor and slide it back against the edge of an old farm pond.

The plot is "L" shaped, each leg is about 70 yards long surrounded by very thick woods, no need for an elevated stand. This plot hasn't been planted for several years. I bush hogged it, disked it and the bottom plowed it. Then the rains came and it lay there sprouting weeds which is a good thing. As it dried out I was able to disk it several times over a period of a couple of weeks, each times destroying a fresh crop of weeds. This little plot is full of coffee weed seeds for some reason.

I bought a bag of Iron & Clay peas and put them out with the old antique grain drill, got a pretty good stand. These will grow and feed the deer till about mid October when we will disk them in and plant a cold weather crop, oats, rye or wheat. Probably will be Wren's Abruzzi Rye as I've had good success with it over the years. The rye grain a little more cold hardy than oats.

Will try to up date every week or so the progress of this plot.
A few pictures to show what is started.
Treefarmer

Had some time this weekend to get it all cleaned up and ready for a spring planting. Hit the store on Sunday and picked up some seeds. Decided we are going to try some watermelon this year, a smaller variety. I do not have much luck with any type of vine on the ground but my son made his pick. Other than that sticking with the basics.. maters, bell & jalapeno peppers, okra and collards. We plant large sunflowers every year for my wife in remembrance of her late mother.

For the last 2 years or so I have been working on this no till gardening method and between the old mulch, grass clippings and leaves, the surface of my garden is easily 10 inches above my boxes.
